The three families
- Hyaluronic acid — naturally found in the skin; provides hydration and volume.
- Calcium hydroxylapatite — found in bone; used for deep lines and cheek fullness.
- Poly-L-lactic acid — stimulates collagen production; used for deep facial wrinkles.
The appointment
- A consultation determines the appropriate filler and the areas to treat.
- The procedure takes 15–60 minutes depending on how many areas are treated.
- Topical anaesthetic may be applied to minimise discomfort.
Results are typically visible immediately, except with poly-L-lactic acid, which works gradually. The procedure is minimally invasive with little downtime.
How long it lasts
- Hyaluronic acid — 6 to 18 months.
- Calcium hydroxylapatite — up to 2 years.
- Poly-L-lactic acid — up to 2 years.
Where filler is placed
- Cheeks — adds volume and lifts sagging skin, restoring youthful contour.
- Nasolabial folds — fills the lines from nose to mouth corners.
- Marionette lines — smooths the shadows running down from the mouth.
- Lips — enhances volume, shape and definition; corrects asymmetry.
- Under-eyes — reduces hollowing and dark circles; requires expert technique.
- Jawline — sharpens contour and adds definition.
- Chin — improves projection, symmetry and profile balance.
- Temples — fills hollows caused by fat and bone loss with age.
- Forehead — smooths contour and creates harmony with the rest of the face.
Is it reversible?
Yes — fillers made with hyaluronic acid are generally reversible. If you are unhappy with the result or a complication occurs, a healthcare professional can inject hyaluronidase to dissolve the filler quickly. This applies primarily to hyaluronic acid fillers, not to every type.
