What it involves

Thread lifts insert barbed or smooth sutures under the skin to lift and tighten tissue. Commonly treated areas include the cheeks, jowls, brow and neck, and body areas such as the arms or thighs.

How it works

Threads are usually made from absorbable materials such as polydioxanone. They provide immediate lift through the mechanical action of threading, and promote collagen production over time for additional tightening and rejuvenation.

The appointment
  • Duration — typically 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Anaesthesia — local anaesthesia is generally used.
  • Recovery — minimal downtime; swelling and bruising usually resolve within days.
Why people choose it
  • Non-surgical — a less invasive alternative to a surgical facelift.
  • Quick recovery — most people return to normal activity within days.
  • Cost-effective — less expensive than surgical options.
Risks and longevity

Common side effects. Temporary discomfort, swelling and bruising.

Potential risks. Infection, asymmetry, thread migration or extrusion.

Longevity. Results are temporary, typically lasting one to three years as the threads dissolve.

Who it suits

Ideal candidates are in their late thirties to fifties with mild to moderate skin laxity. Those with severe laxity may not achieve the result they want and might be better served by surgery.

Aftercare
  • Avoid extreme facial expressions, massaging the area, and excessive sun.
  • Avoid alcohol for three days.
  • Apply ice packs to reduce swelling and follow the aftercare instructions given to you.
